Mobility:
The Kansas City Zoo has several motorized scooters, as well as wheel chairs. The zoo is sufficiently large that I would recommend getting one for people with mobility issues.
Also, the Kansas City Zoo has two distinct areas, an “upper” area and a “lower” area. The path between the two areas is fairly steep. If a person has mobility or or pulmonary issues, I would suggest taking the tram that runs between the two areas. The path does not have trees or shade, so on hot days it might be advisable to take the tram.
Both the upper and lower areas are fairly flat. However, they are spread out, especially the lower area, so taking things slow or getting the above mentioned scooter or wheel chair should be considered for people with mobility or pulmonary issues.
Food and Drink:
I apologize for not getting photos of the various places to eat. There are three areas to eat at the Kansas City Zoo. In the upper area near the entrance is the Beastro Cafe. It has deserts, fountain drinks, and cold sandwiches and salads. Over by the penguins is the Tuxedo Grill which I missed on my visit. Sorry. Lastly, down in the lower area is Rafiki Restaurant with fairly standard fare. They have hamburgers (including a black bean burger), chicken sandwiches, and chicken wraps. For something different, they did have an “African Beef Samosa”. I looked it up and an African beef samosa is a triangular pastry filled with beef and African spices.
Souvenirs:
The two main gift shops are at the entrance and near the tram stop at the lower area. Both shops had a good selection of shirts, drinking cups and glasses, stuffed animals, and other toys.
Safety:
Because of the size of the zoo and walking between the upper and lower areas, on hot days people should stay hydrated, including children. Also, when taking the tram be careful and remember to follow the instructions of the tram operators.
After an issue with someone getting too close to the elephants at another zoo with similar construction, I would remind people to stay on your side of the barriers.
Miscellaneous:
Remember any food and drink or souvenirs you buy go to help fund the zoo, which will go towards conservation of various species.
There are a few statues in the zoo.
There is a train that goes around the upper part of the zoo.
At the lower area of the zoo there is a sky-tram which goes over the African area.
